Spot These Early Signs of Nail Fungus

Prevention is better than cure. This is more than just a cliché as it can really be applied to one’s health. In order to prevent anything from happening or getting worse, you need to watch out for signs.

If you do not want to have toenail fungus, for example, you need to be on the look out for these subtlest of signs. Your being observant will really pay off. You don’t want to suffer for many years enduring a battle against nail fungus right?

YahooHealth has outlined 3 early warning signs that you should look out for if you do not want to be included in an increasing number of victims of nail fungal infection.

One of the first signs is yellowish or brownish discoloration of the toenails. Women often think that this may be caused by frequent application of nail polish but some may be tricked into thinking just that when the fact is that fungi love to live in polished nails as they are darker than unpainted nails.
You also need to look out for thickened nails. Thickenening of the nails may already mean bad news. If fungi have lived in your nails for too long they also die and decompose within your nail. These dead oraganisms pile up underneath the nails making your nail look thickened. However, if you have had thick nails all your life, do not panic. Some people are just lucky to have thick nails devoid of fungus.

Do you have crumbling nails? You may need to worry as this is a sign that fungus has lived in your nails long enough to cause them to crumble. Crumbling of nails is never healthy.

If you notice these changes on your toenails, just be safe, see a podiatrist. According to Wikipedia, Onychomycosis or nail fungus is so prevalent that it affects 6-8% of the adult population. Now you have to be careful if you don’t want to be included in this statistics.
